Being a spiritual person and having a spiritual practice isn’t ‘woo woo’ — nor is it about dogma and doctrine.

While for many of us it might be found in a house of worship, the essence of being on a spiritual path is about finding an individual practice that elevates our consciousness and brings to our lives a sense of peace, purpose and connection.

Connection to others.

Connection to something bigger than us.

Connection to our inner wisdom.

Cultivating a spiritual dimension to our lives indeed makes us happier, calmer and more grounded — whether we’re a Yogi, climbing the corporate ladder (or both).

The thing is, many of us want to bring spirituality into our lives, but have no idea where to start. Or, we think we have to spend hours each day in deep meditation, solitude or prayer.

It’s simply about creating sacred time to do the inner work — every day — in a way that works for you.

Here are some ways you can slow down and tune into your spiritual side:


Find solitude

No, we’re not suggesting you disappear into a cave or withdraw to the top of a mountain.

Whether it’s physical solitude, or mental solitude, creating moments in your day for stillness,  silence and introspection is a simple but powerful way to see and feel who you really are.

Unplug, from your work and from others (if only for five minutes), sit with yourself and turn inward.

You’ll be amazed at what you start to hear amidst the sweet silence.


Get outside

Many people claim connecting with nature as a profound, spiritual experience. Why? Because it has a powerful grounding and healing effect.

The Earth is vibrating with natural, divine energy, so try and tap into that on a daily basis.

Kick off your shoes, lay on the grass, dive into the sea, climb a mountain, breathe in the fresh air.

Let Mother Nature hold you.



More and more people are grasping the fact that meditation is not only a way to decrease stress, nurture inner calm and enhance mindfulness — but a vehicle for spiritual growth.

The number of meditation techniques is vast — from deep and transcendental, to visualisation, chakra cleansing and repeating mantras, the whole meditation thing can get a little overwhelming.

Meditation can be just as powerful in the form of simply sitting and breathing with consciousness and awareness for a few minutes each day.

  • Find a comfortable seated position
  • Sit straight
  • Close your eyes
  • Focus on each breathe.
  • Don’t chase your thoughts. Let them come to you. Observe them.


Practice yoga

Many people turn to Yoga for its many physical benefits, only to experience a myriad of intense emotional and spiritual transformation, too.

You see, from a yogic perspective, we can tap into our spiritual side by cultivating awareness and then taking that awareness into all dimensions of our life.

If you’re open to the process, simply start by connecting your mind, body and breathe to your inner being.

Yoga also gives us the opportunity to connect our mind, body and breathe to our inner being — if we’re open to the process. And that steadiness, flexibility and mindfulness you achieve on the mat? Strive to reflect it in your actions and attitude off the mat, too.


Study the work of spiritual authors

While spirituality is an individual practice, there’s a lot to be said for the wisdom, insight and experience of those who have a deep connection and understanding of what it is to be on such a path.

 There’s no shortage of tomes and other literature that the explore the concept of everything from consciousness to inner peace, mindfulness, the law of attraction and beyond.

Consider not only reading — but studying and practicing —the work of authors such as Eckhart Tolle, Marianne Williamson, Gabby Bernstein, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsch and Louise Hay. You may just find a trusted guide for your spiritual journey.
