It’s safe to say we all love the taste of a freshly squeezed juice, especially in the morning. Over the last few years we’ve become a society more health focused and aware, moving away from supermarket carton juices to freshly squeezed, in a bid to cut down on sugar and live healthier lives.

As juicing has grown in popularity so have the different types that can be purchased, and we’re now seeing stores dedicated just to juice, popping up all over. While juicing, or more specifically cold press juicing, is being embraced by people of all shapes and sizes, is it really 2016s healthiest trend, or our most sugar laden ritual?


Do we really need Sugar?

Fresh fruit, the source of natural sweetness, is health promoting and an excellent source of calories for the human body. While our natural sweet tooth is in fact totally healthy, companies and food brands have capitalised on our affinity for sweetness, by adding refined sugars into their products – some surprising, including milk and bread. This not only makes them taste better, it makes them addictive encouraging you to consume more, and in turn, making them more money.

While natural sugars found in fruit support out health, refined (or extracted) sugar does not. The process of refining sugar is completely removes fibre and basically ever other nutrient, leaving behind only the sugar. The process is very calorie dense and over stimulating to our taste buds. What worse is that refined sugars are being added to already high in fat foods, causing disease, weight gain, and even mental illness.


What’s the healthiest juice for me?

It’s important to know that not all juices are created equally, and the way they are made and extracted impacts drastically on the nutritional value. There are two types of juicers that are used, traditional (or centrifugal), and cold pressed (or masticating).

Traditional juicing consists of high speed and heat processes which extract juice from the fruit then destroys and oxidises nutrients, antioxidants and enzymes.  This can be physically seen in the visible separation in your juice. Cold press juicers, on the other hand, use a cold, slow pressed extraction method that retains maximum nutritional levels, so you won’t see the separation occur.      BK10

Studies have shown cold press juicing extract up to 50% more nutrients than traditional juicing, and yields up to 50% more juice[1]. What this means is that your cold press juice is literally packed full of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

Green and Lean:

Handful wheatgrass

2 large chunks pineapple

1 green apple

1 continental cucumber

Handful baby spinach

Thumb sized piece of ginger

I love this juice first thing in the morning! A delicious green juice packed with a tropical punch. Pineapple contains enzymes including bromelain that aid your digestion. Wheatgrass and ginger are well known metabolism boosters. Apple can slow carbohydrate digestion to improve blood sugar regulation, while cucumber is another metabolism energiser. Baby spinach will help to alkalise and detoxify the body.


Immunity Booster:

1 Orange

½ Lemon

1 Carrot

1cm Cube Fresh Ginger

1cm Cube Fresh Turmeric, or 1 tsp Ground Turmeric

When juiced, stir in 1 tsp chia seeds, and add a pinch of cayenne pepper to boost anti-inflammatory properties

As the seasons change they bring on the flu. This juice can be used all year to boost immunity, but can be enjoyed when sick to assist in recovery. The citrus fruits contained in this juice are a fantastic source of powerful antioxidant Vitamin C, which boosts your immune system by protecting against infections and invading pathogens.

Ginger and turmeric have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial. Vitamin A, found in carrots, is essential for the proper functioning of immune cells. The chia seeds provide a boost of nutrients to keep your immune system healthy, and are a great source of healthy fats, needed to successfully carry the Vitamin A into your system properly.
