AN INTERVIEW WITH AMELIA HARVEY
She’s a soul-centred coach on a mission to empower young women by providing them with a toolkit for a love-filled life on every level — body, mind and spirit.
Amelia Harvey lives and breaths self love.
She’s also determined to challenge the idea that self love is arrogant or selfish — an important message we love to share here on The Daily Guru.
That’s why we couldn’t wait to sit Amelia down on the #GuruToWatch couch, get to know her a little better and introduce her to you — the Daily Guru tribe.
Today she’s sharing with us the beautiful story behind her coaching biz and how she has cultivated a loving relationship, thriving career and healed her relationship with food by practicing the very message she preaches.
We know you’ll love Amelia as much as we do.
The best part of my job is…
Working with my beautiful clients and shining the light for them to find overflowing self love, true radiant health, and amazing ease and flow in their lives. I have so much love for what I do!
I chose to enter this field of work because…
I finished my Honours Degree in Psychology but I had a real urge to do things differently and help people in a more holistic way. I loved the idea of coaching and it was very much a, ‘Why not!?” decision! Since then I have learned so much and have spent lots of time, money and energy becoming the very best coach I can be.
The greatest challenge in my career has been…
Starting and running my own business has been a huge challenge – I jumped in head first knowing I wanted to help people and then realised I had to run a business as well! Starting out, I was wearing all the hats (coaching, marketing, sales, copy, bookkeeping, graphic design, web design etc) and it certainly wasn’t easy. I have learned so much and developed a real passion for understanding how to run a successful business.
The funniest misconceptions about my industry/company/brand are….
The biggest misconception I run into is that self love is arrogant or selfish. Putting others’ needs before our own is so glorified (as is being busy!) and self love really moves away from that.
Self love is about filling ourselves up by doing things that we love and things that nurture and nourish us. When we make self love a priority, we are actually able to give so much more and show up as our very best selves for the people in our lives.
Self love isn’t about being up yourself! It’s all about being kind, gentle, and compassionate with ourselves.
The most influential person in my career has been…
My career has really been influenced, inspired and supported by so many people — some in person, some via books and e-courses and blogs. At the end of the day, I am the most influential person in my career because I am the one making the decisions and calling the shots! And I definitely need to give a shout out to my amazing man here too – his unwavering support and faith in me keeps me inspired and excited to do what I do.
If I could give one piece of advice to my 18-year-old self, it would be….
Be gentle with yourself! And appreciate the small things. I suppose there’s quite a bit of advice I’d give to 18-year-old me, but I can guarantee I wouldn’t have listened! I think everything I’ve been through and every lesson I’ve learned has come at the right time – when I was ready to hear it.
My greatest achievement has been…
Cultivating self love and as a result finding an amazing and loving relationship, creating a career that allows me to feel very connected to my purpose, healing my relationship with food and spending more time every day showing up as my best self.
The greatest personal challenge I have over come is…
My struggle with disordered eating. I was stuck in the diet, binge, guilt cycle for a few years and it was truly horrible. I had a totally neurotic relationship with food and my self worth was at rock bottom. I thought the answers lay in the latest diet or a crazy exercise regime but those things were only creating even more disordered eating.
Healing took several years, from deciding enough was enough and banning diets, to learning to love and appreciate my body it was a slow process with lots of ups and downs. When I finally stopped worrying about what I ate and made self love the priority, my relationship with food truly healed. Now I make conscious choices to nourish my body, and I allow myself indulgences too!
I don’t understand why…
People sweat the small stuff.
I try to relax by…
Long walks, beach swims, baths, and cuddles!
My biggest fear is…
Strange noises when I’m home alone…haha.
I can’t live without…
Sunshine and the sea.
I really wish I had…
The ability to travel via teleportation!
The greatest lesson I have learnt is….
To prioritise self love over everything else.
If I had one super power, it would be….
To be fluent in every language
If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…
My man, Danielle LaPorte, Oprah, and Tony Robbins.
