We’re thrilled to introduce Natania Hinwood to you! Natania is the founder of eco-friendly office and homeware brand and online store, Sachi and Daphs.

After noticing a gap in the market for modern, sleek yet sustainable décor for your home and office, Natania decided to disrupt the design industry and start an environmentally conscious business, Sachi and Daphs.

The products in the Sachi and Daphs range are made from 65% recyclable material, are non-irritant, non-toxic and non-allergenic, and are designed and produced in Australia.

The best part of my job is…

Creating something unique, different and new that’s not only stylish but good for the environment. Nothing tops doing something you’re intensely passionate about and the fusion of sustainability and design is what makes my heart sing. It’s been a dream for many years to start my own business and to do so with a loving and supportive family feels like I’m just living, rather than working a job. It’s fun, it’s exciting and it drives me every day.

I chose to enter this field of work because…

I wanted to provide more choice for conscious consumers and make green living the forefront of interior design. I’ve always been passionate about the environment and leaving a healthy planet for all that walk in our footsteps after us. I’ve worked in the renewables sector for many years so have always had a keen interest in products that are good for the environment. Sachi and Daphs was a natural progression of this and offers products that are eco-friendly, made from recycled plastic bottles, preventing waste going to landfill. The entire range is infinitely recyclable.

The greatest challenge in my career has been…

Finding suitable partners. We choose our collaborators with care to ensure they align with our vision and purpose. We have learnt that selecting suppliers that are local can not only ease the communication barrier but this sustainable business practice can have a big impact on the environment. We collaborated with an industrial designer in Melbourne in the initial start-up stage, but due to the distance between the two of us, we didn’t make much progress within our desired time frame. We now like to keep our collaborators local as we prefer to take a hands-on approach to our business.

The funniest misconceptions about my industry/company/brand are….

That green is dorky or boring. We’re here to challenge this misconception by offering funky designs and vibrant colours for our range of home and office wares.

The most influential person in my career has been…

This woman’s name can’t roll off my tongue quick enough, the fabulous, incredibly talented, driven, generous, Lisa Messenger. Her approach to business is relentless and inspiring. She’s the mentor I’ve never met yet helps me daily to drive Sachi and Daphs forward.

If I could give one piece of advice to my 18-year-old self, it would be….

The biggest thing I’ve learnt from my business is to just start and enjoy the journey. It evolves and continues to grow with each and every day. It takes discipline and focus to ensure you’re not distracted or head off course but I follow my purpose and let it just flow. I now know the importance of backing myself and trusting my instincts.

My greatest achievement has been…

Furthering my studies, whilst working full time, with a toddler in tow. I’m proud to have pushed myself and taken the steps needed to create a career which makes me truly happy. It took me a long time to work out what brought me a sense of fulfilment. I finished school with no clue what I wanted to do with the circle of friends around me jumping straight into degrees at uni and careers. I was a slow starter but have got to the end result, albeit a longer journey. I invest a lot of time in my personal development and have adopted a “learn as you go” mentality. This year I’m ready to tackle graphic design!

The greatest personal challenge I have over come is…

Lack of confidence can be crippling. It stopped me in my tracks from doing a lot of the things I love. When I was younger, I dreamt of starting many different businesses but never got out of the starting blocks, as I was afraid of taking the leap. Afraid of judgements made by others. My best advice for any person young or old wanting to start their own business is to just go for it. Have faith in yourself and your abilities.

I don’t understand why…

Why we aren’t doing more of the simple, easy things to save the environment. Everyday habits that are so easy to incorporate into everyday life.

I try to relax by…

Spending time in my garden, slowly but surely starting to grow some produce so we can be a little bit more self-sufficient.

My biggest fear is…

I can honestly say, at this point in time – I’m fearless. It’s taken a long time to get to this place but I’m at ease with the natural journey of life. It’s a mental toughness that has taken years to work on.

I can’t live without…

The sisterhood that is my 5 closest friends from High School. We are nothing short of madness when we’re all together but our closeness brings me the greatest joy and inspiration.

I really wish I had…

A daily coffee god who delivered to my bedside table every morning. I’m not a functioning human before my daily dose.

The greatest lesson I have learnt is….

Success isn’t measured in a monetary form. It can be measured in many different ways, it doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen without hard work.

If I had one super power, it would be….

To influence people well enough so on their own, they make powerful and positive decisions about their life and the world around us.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…

Rafael Nadal, Lisa Messenger, Louise Hay and Iris Apfel
