AN INTERVIEW WITH TARA O
She may be a qualified tantric sex teacher and sexuality coach, but that doesn’t mean that Tara O has nine-hour marathon sex sessions (ok, maybe once or twice!). In this honest and open interview up on the website today, Tara shares with DG readers that she goes through periods of low libido, orgasmic hurdles and low desire as well.
From devalued sex, deep depression and an eating disorder, Tara did the work to heal her relationship towards her body, men, sex and pleasure. She has spent many years diving deep into ancient sexuality practices, holistic health, spirituality and self-love principles, and today, is revolutionising our ideas around sexuality.
The best part of my job is…
Working with brave, courageous, and damn beautiful women! Exploring sexuality and our sensual, sexual selves can be scary, so I feel so blessed when women trust me to help guide them towards the changes they desire and DESERVE! I also love the magic that happens when women come together during my workshops. We drop our masks and speak honestly and openly about what we are facing, seeking or working through. Women are such powerful healers and to watch women support other women cracks my heart wide open.
I chose to enter this field of work because…
This work saved my life. What I teach is what I learned through my own experience of digging myself out of a thick depression, self harm and an eating disorder. I was lost, scared and using sex, drugs (anything really) to fill the hole inside me. I sought validation through one-night stands. I saw sex and my body as a commodity to be traded with in the hope that I would receive love in return. It was a vicious and destructive cycle. The work I did to heal my relationship towards my body, men, sex and pleasure ultimately led me to loving me and my damaging behaviours went away. I choose to teach what I know in the hope that I can help other women do the same.
The greatest challenge in my career has been…
Constantly facing the stereotypes and stigma of being a ‘sex coach.’ My work is incredibly important to me so the silly jokes grew old quick. I used to find myself really explaining my work in order for people to understand that I am not teaching sex positions all day long and to take me seriously. Now I don’t bother. If someone is genuinely interested in my work, I can usually tell and reserve my energy for them. Unfortunately, as a country, we still have a long way to go before we see sexuality as just another aspect of our wellbeing that needs to be explored, addressed and respected.
The funniest misconceptions about my industry/company/brand are….
Gosh, there are so many! Some of them are quite hurtful and come from people’s fears or judgements because I claim my right to be an authentic, sexual, powerful and confident woman.
I get a lot of “You must have so much sex!” Actually, I don’t. I go through periods of low libido, orgasmic hurdles and low desire as well. No nine hour marathon sex sessions for me 😉 Ok, maybe once or twice!
The most influential person in my career has been…
I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for my teachers. I have so much respect and gratitude to every single person who shared their time, knowledge and space with me.
There was however, one man. Many, many years ago, this man saw a light in me when all I saw was darkness. He told me I could change the world and I believed him. I hold him in my heart every step of the way now.
If I could give one piece of advice to my 18-year-old self, it would be….
Love doesn’t come from the outside. Find it, feel it, be it, from the inside Tara and cultivate it with everything you’ve got, baby!
My greatest achievement has been…
Writing my book Wildly Irresistible. I poured my heart into that little baby and I feel so proud to share it with the world.
The greatest personal challenge I have over come is…
Believing I was worthy. Worthy of love, pleasure, success, happiness – the whole damn lot! Sometimes I still struggle with it.
I don’t understand why…
Sex education in schools is so poor
I try to relax by…
Swimming in the ocean (I love nudie swimming!)
My biggest fear is…
I can’t live without…
I really wish I had…
Right now I’m in India, so clean water would be awesome!
The greatest lesson I have learnt is….
If I had one super power, it would be….
To be fluent in every language. Is that a super power?!
If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…
My mum (alive), my Nanna Tilly (passed), my friend Rachael (alive ) and her mum (passed)
