An Interview with Sahara Rose

First embracing Ayurveda after trying various methods of healing her digestive issues and amenorrhea, Sahara Rose discovered the importance of Ayurveda under the guidance of an Ayurvedic doctor in India. She then spent several years in India, studying Ayurveda and creating her own unique approach towards incorporating Ayurveda into modern lifestyles.

Since then, Sahara Rose has authored two books, become the host of her number 1 podcast, The Highest Self and been named “a leading voice for the millennial generation into the new paradigm shift” by Deepak Chopra.

We are so excited to welcome Sahara Rose as our latest Guru to Watch and you can enjoy her insightful and open interview below!

The best part of my job is…

Inspiring people to become their highest selves.

The greatest challenge in my career has been…

Not having the roadmap. Making it up as I go along and learning it all on my own.

What does your career path look like?

I went to college to become an International Human Rights Lawyer. While volunteering in the slums of India, I became very sick, which brought me to an Ayurvedic Doctor. The Doctor was able to put pieces together of the puzzle I never knew before– that my digestive issues, were related to my hormonal, which were related to my insomnia and anxiety. I became obsessed with learning everything there is to know about Ayurveda and ended up living in India for two years studying this ancient healing science.

I instantly received the download that I needed to write a book on this subject. I finally did (with a lot of ups and downs), which took me another two years, and eventually Penguin Random House hired me to write the official Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda. That book is now the #1 best-selling Ayurveda book globally, and my next book Eat Feel Fresh: A Contemporary Plant-Based Ayurvedic Cookbook has the very recipes that healed my life.

I eventually met Deepak Chopra, who wrote the foreword of both of my books.

A typical day for me goes a bit like this…

Open my eyes and recall my dreams. List 3 things I’m grateful for. Splash my face with water. Tongue scraping. Ayurvedic facial massage. Make a warm elixir of turmeric, ginger, ashwaghanda and black pepper with a splash of coconut milk. Stare at my dog. Stretch on my floor. Walk to pilates. Answer emails and admin tasks. Podcast. Write/ edit my books. Walk by the beach. Make dinner. Answer emails. Stare at my dog. Journal. Sleep.

What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world?

How we are destroying the planet and wasting resources. Bringing back the connection to Earth.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

When doors suddenly started opening for me, I was scared. A thought in my head kept telling me “Oh don’t get used to it, whenever something good happens, something bad follows.” I was afraid everything would be pulled out from under my feet. I asked Deepak Chopra, “Are periods of synchronicity and radical growth followed by periods of inertia? Can life always feel like flow? He said “If it doesn’t, then you’re doing something wrong.” That changed everything for me. Now, I don’t expect a catastrophe. I expect ease and grace. When things aren’t flowing, something within needs to change.

When was a turning point in your career?

I met a homeless man asking for help to cross the street. I was so busy, but a voice in my head told me to go help the man so I turned around and did, despite being late for a meeting and eating while walking (a big Ayurvedic no-no.) Turns out, he was a professor of physics and an Iraqi refugee. We had a great conversation and I put him in the subway, two blocks away from where we had initially began. I started thinking about how nice that interaction was and checked my phone and there I saw the words of Deepak Chopra endorsing my book. My lifelong dream actualized. I truly believe because I said yes to helping that man, even when it was out of my way, even when he smelled, even when he looked like the last person on Earth you’d want to hold the arm of, the universe opened the door of possibility to me. He was an angel in disguise and a test to see if I’d honor and respect a physicist without prestige and credibility the same way I would a revered physicist author. Treat everyone you meet like a God because they may be God in disguise.

Who has been your biggest mentor so far?

The ocean. It always puts things back in perspective to me, reminds me how small my problems are, the infinity of the world, and how things will always change. She is my greatest guru.

If you were to describe yourself in 5 adjectives, what would they be?

Creative, ambitious, connected, talented, wise.

Complete the following sentences.

I don’t understand why…

More people don’t seek truth.

If I didn’t know my age, I would say I feel…

My biggest fear is…

Not living up to my greatest potential/ burning myself out (two ends of the same coin, right?).

The greatest lesson I’ve learnt is…

It actually doesn’t matter.

If I had one superpower, it would be…

To clean up the oceans and save the rainforests.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they would be…

Osho, Michael Jackson, Gandhi and Siddhartha Gautama.
